Day 3:
Today was quite a busy day. We added Ethidium Bromide (EB) and Colcemid to our blood samples in the morning. After which, we began harvesting the samples. Harvesting was quite easy, but rather tedious cos you have to do the same step many times. First, we had to swell the cells using ohnuki. After which, we fix the cells several times using fixatives. So we spent half the day harvesting. In the afternoon, we followed Dr Alvin Lim to attend a talk on Birth Defects. Though all the terms they talked abt sounded alien to me, it was quite interesting as I got to know more about pregnancy and its possible problems. There was this woman who is only 27 yrs old, but she already had 9 pregnancies!!! And 3 of them were miscarriages!!! Omg. Summore she is a single mother. tsk tsk tsk. terrible terrible terrible.
I also found out that actually when you're pregnant, you go to see an Obstetrician, not a Gynae. hahaha. I always though it was a Gynae, but actually you only see a gynae when you have pregnancy problems. hehehe.
After the talk, we went back to the lab to make slides for our blood samples. This required more techniques. I think we really need MORE practice. hahaha. anw, we managed to capture some nice metaphase chromosomes on the microscope from our slides, so we left our slides to heat overnight before banding them tml. Seems like tml will be a busy day as well :)
